Samson by Solomon Joseph Solomon (1887)
Samson is on permanent display in Liverpool’s Walker Art Gallery (one of my favourite places in the entire world!) When I was at university I would regularly go to the gallery just to see this piece. This picture doesn’t do it justice because the scale of the artwork is enormous, it covers an entire wall just on its own.
I’m not in any way religious but I do believe that biblical scenes have inspired some of the most dramatic, thought provoking works of art down the centuries. We shouldn’t take galleries and museums for granted, especially those of us fortunate enough to live in countries where access is free of charge. And yes, I always pop some money into the donations stand!
